Browser automation MCP servers
Find MCP servers that control Chrome, Firefox, or a cloud browser: Playwright, Puppeteer, and hosted options compared by trust score and transport.
What to know about Browser automation MCP servers
Browser automation is one of the largest shelves in the MCP catalog. The servers fall into three groups: wrappers around Playwright or Puppeteer that launch a local headless browser, bridges that attach to the Chrome window you already have open, and hosted browser platforms that run sessions in the cloud and return screenshots or page snapshots over HTTP.
The main difference between them is how the agent sees the page. Some servers send the accessibility tree as text, which is cheap and works with any model. Others send screenshots and expect a vision-capable model to pick coordinates. Accessibility snapshots are usually faster and more reliable for forms and navigation, while screenshots help with canvas-heavy apps and visual checks.
Before you install one, check whether it can reuse your logged-in profile. That is convenient, but it also gives the agent your cookies. A fresh profile or a dedicated test account is the safer default, and hosted options let you keep browsing traffic off your own machine entirely.

How to install one
- Compare the shortlist. moontide leads this topic. Open two or three listings and compare their tools, transport, and required API keys.
- Copy the config for your client. Each listing has an install guide, for example Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code. The client guides show where each config file lives.
- Scope credentials, then restart. Use the narrowest token or folder the server needs, restart the client, and check that the new tools appear.
Browser automation MCP questions
Should I pick a Playwright or a Puppeteer based MCP server?
Playwright servers support Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit and ship accessibility snapshots out of the box, so they are the common default. Puppeteer servers are Chromium-only but light and well understood. Either works for most agent tasks; pick the one with the higher trust score and recent releases.
Do browser MCP servers need a visible browser window?
No. Most run headless by default and only open a window when you pass a flag. Running headed is useful while you watch the agent work for the first time, then switch back to headless for routine runs.
When is a hosted browser server worth it?
When you need many parallel sessions, residential IPs, or CAPTCHA handling, or when your client cannot launch local processes. Hosted servers connect over a URL, so they also work in web clients. Filter for them on the remote servers page.
