What to know about Vector database MCP servers
Vector database servers expose collections of embeddings as MCP tools. Typical tools create or list collections, upsert vectors with metadata, and run similarity queries with filters. Most major vendors now publish an official server, and community servers fill the gaps for self-hosted engines.
If you already run Postgres, a pgvector-aware database server may be all you need, since it handles vector columns alongside ordinary SQL. Dedicated engines such as Qdrant, Weaviate, Milvus, or Pinecone are a better fit once collections reach millions of vectors or you need fast filtered search and replication.
Watch which tools can write or delete. An agent with upsert and delete access can quietly reshape an index that other systems rely on. Read-only API keys, or a separate collection for agent experiments, keep production retrieval stable.

How to install one
- Compare the shortlist. Graphicle leads this topic. Open two or three listings and compare their tools, transport, and required API keys.
- Copy the config for your client. Each listing has an install guide, for example Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code. The client guides show where each config file lives.
- Scope credentials, then restart. Use the narrowest token or folder the server needs, restart the client, and check that the new tools appear.
Vector database MCP questions
Which vector database has the best MCP support?
Pinecone, Qdrant, Weaviate, Chroma, and Milvus all have maintained servers, several of them official. The ranking below orders them by trust score, so the top results are the best documented and most actively maintained.
Does the MCP server create the embeddings for me?
Some do: they call an embedding model when you upsert plain text. Others expect you to pass vectors you computed yourself. Check the server's tool list for a text input on its upsert or query tool.
Can I use Postgres instead of a dedicated vector database?
Yes. With the pgvector extension, Postgres stores and searches embeddings, and general database MCP servers can query those columns. It is a simple choice when your data already lives in Postgres.
