Database MCP servers for SQL and NoSQL
Database MCP servers for Postgres, MySQL, SQLite, MongoDB, Redis, and more. Compare read-only modes, supported engines, and trust scores in one list.
What to know about Database MCP servers
Database servers are among the most installed MCP servers, and the catalog covers nearly every engine: relational databases such as Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, and SQLite; document and key-value stores such as MongoDB, DynamoDB, and Redis; and managed platforms such as Supabase, Neon, and PlanetScale with their own official servers.
Two designs dominate. Single-engine servers expose tools tailored to one database, such as listing indexes or explaining a query plan. Multi-engine servers use a generic driver layer and work across several databases with the same tool set. Single-engine servers tend to give the model richer context; multi-engine ones are easier to standardise across a team.
Safety features vary more than anything else. Look for a read-only mode, statement allow-lists, row limits on results, and support for connecting through a role with restricted privileges. Those settings matter far more than raw feature count once an agent can run queries on its own.

How to install one
- Compare the shortlist. DBHub leads this topic. Open two or three listings and compare their tools, transport, and required API keys.
- Copy the config for your client. Each listing has an install guide, for example Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code. The client guides show where each config file lives.
- Scope credentials, then restart. Use the narrowest token or folder the server needs, restart the client, and check that the new tools appear.
Database MCP questions
Can I make a database MCP server read-only?
Many servers have a read-only flag. Even when they do, connect with a database role that only has SELECT on the tables you want exposed, so the restriction is enforced by the database itself.
Are there MCP servers for NoSQL databases?
Yes. MongoDB, Redis, DynamoDB, Cassandra, Couchbase, and Neo4j all have servers, several maintained by the vendors. Browse the databases category for the full list.
Is it safe to connect an agent to a production database?
Start with a replica or staging copy. If you must use production, use read-only credentials, cap result sizes, and keep human review on any write. Logs of every query the agent runs are worth turning on.
