Knowledge retrieval MCP servers for wikis and notes
MCP servers that search wikis, notes, and internal docs in Notion, Confluence, Obsidian, and more, so AI answers cite your own team knowledge.
What to know about Knowledge retrieval MCP servers
Knowledge retrieval servers connect an assistant to the places where teams already write things down: Notion workspaces, Confluence spaces, Obsidian vaults, Google Docs, and internal documentation sites. Rather than building a vector index, most of them call the tool's own search API and return matching pages for the model to read.
That approach keeps setup light and respects the permissions you already have, because the server sees only what its token can see. The trade-off is that search quality depends on the underlying product. Some servers add their own semantic index on top for better recall across long or messy wikis.
When comparing options, check whether the server can read page hierarchies and databases as well as plain pages, and whether it can write. Read-only access is enough for answering questions, while write access lets agents keep runbooks and meeting notes up to date.

How to install one
- Compare the shortlist. Obsidian Turbocharged leads this topic. Open two or three listings and compare their tools, transport, and required API keys.
- Copy the config for your client. Each listing has an install guide, for example Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, or VS Code. The client guides show where each config file lives.
- Scope credentials, then restart. Use the narrowest token or folder the server needs, restart the client, and check that the new tools appear.
Knowledge retrieval MCP questions
Is there a knowledge MCP server for both Notion and Confluence?
Some multi-source servers index several tools at once, but most are built for one product. Running a separate server per tool is common and keeps each token scoped to its own workspace.
Can I search local Markdown notes with MCP?
Yes. Obsidian and Markdown vault servers read notes straight from disk, and a filesystem server can search a plain folder of notes too.
Will the assistant see pages I cannot see?
No. The server acts with the token you give it, so it sees exactly what that integration or user can see. Share only the spaces the assistant actually needs.
